Collectable #22: Boy Boy Boy

Set to the Underworld song of the same name, Boy Boy Boy stems from an idea I had when I used to teach seminars on revision to secondary school children.

Seminars would start at 9 in the morning and could be anywhere from Reading to Bruton so I woke up around 4 o'clock some days. I listened to the Underworld album 'Oblivion With Bells' when I caught the train for these seminars and Boy Boy Boy was the one I always replayed once the album was finished. For me, the song feels like a journey thorugh a space, like a run, where the images and thoughts you hoped you'd put to rest when you left the house still jump back in. I think guilt is a constant strain on your body and it's something you aren't able to shake until you make ammends with it. It always jumps back in.

Boy Boy Boy, the film, was developed with Jon while we were looking for our next project to work on in February 2026. Jon really encouraged us to focus on this idea of punishing yourself through physical exertion, which can seem like a form of self harm rather than self improvement in certain contexts. Seth (the runner) is stricken with guilt at what he's become a part of and is desperate to run somewhere where he can feel comfort. He feels itchy in the house, sitting with the weight of the tapes he's recorded of the nationalist group, so he goes on a run to try and clear his head.
